We took the kids to Palm Springs last week on a spur-of-the-moment spring break, road trip. We stayed at the newly opened Ace Hotel Palm Springs, part of the growing Ace Hotel group. They're an awesome hotel mini-chain based in Portland and have nailed a totally zeitgeisty organic chic, sustainable vintage aesthetic, with turntables in many rooms, found art, repurposed materials, great food and coffee (from legendary Stumptown roasters), and a totally chill vibe. The staff is double chill: Portland meets Palm Springs. It can't get more laid back than that. Also, the rooms are majorly cheaps, starting at 89 bucks for a single! The place has a modern commune vibe, with massage yurts, saltwater pools, handmade walking sticks and beach bags in the rooms, communal fireplaces, and a restaurant serving simple organic food (fish tacos, cowboy steak, veggie pot pie, cocktails made with fresh fruit and awesome ingredients), all of it served poolside. The soundtrack played throughout the property is beyond amazing. Of the 400 songs wafting through our dreamy vacation: rare dylan, django rheinhardt, band of horses, early-career Pixies, joni mitchell, drony drowsy sonic youth--all on the mid-tempo tip and all oddly ideal in the dry heat by the pool, all washed down by cucumber water, Hemingway-proof daiquiris with brown sugar simple syrup, and fresh fruit sno-cones served from a blue school bus. You can them virgin or spiked, which about sums up a perfect Gastrokid getaway. We didn't do much beyond take our time ordering things like grass fed burgers, white bean dip with pita, and veggie pot pie at the King's Highway restaurant...

...pick out our free vintage-y bikes built for one...
...or built for two...
...and dream of our next trip back to the Ace Hotel.
